Dramatic Pacific Sunset

On the last day of a trip to an October 1981 trip to California I drove up the Pacific Coast Highway to near Santa Barbara. There was a forest fire that day inland and smoke was blowing out over the Pacific Ocean.

A guy I met at a scenic overlook said that that night the sunset would be pretty spectacular because of the smoke. So I stayed around for the show and it was pretty impressive.

The top image was made with a cross match filter. I don’t know who the couple is in the third image. They pulled into the overlook to enjoy the view for a few minutes and then left. I stood behind them to include them an image.

All four images were scanned from slides that were created on Oct. 31, 1981.
