In a Square Spotlight

leave a comment »

Suki seems to have figured which way the sun moves and comes in our bedroom windows. In late morning to early afternoon, it comes through the window and onto the floor, making a square-shaped pattern in the process. In another hour or so it will be illuminating a corner of the bed and Suki will have moved to there to spend her afternoon hours soaking it up while napping.

Sun Worshipper

Suki has an afternoon routine. She stretches out on a corner of the bed and soaks up the sunlight coming in through a window facing south. She might even get on the floor and lay in the sunlight. In this image, she appears to be placing her arms and paws toward the sun as though engaging in a worshiping ritual.

Acting Like a Greyhound

leave a comment »

I was at the Main Street beach in Vermilion, Ohio, about the same time as a couple who had brought their dog out to get some excercise. The guy was throwing a tennis ball that the dog would dutifully fetch.

I had my camera with me and sought to make images of the dog fetching, which provided harder to do than it seemed because he was moving so fast and darting all over the place.

In this image, his profile reminded me a bit of the greyhound on the bus company logo. The dog is closing in on the tennis ball.

Fast Asleep

leave a comment »

I ran across this photograph awhile back of Tiger, a cat that was in the family between 1974 and 1985.

She was fast asleep on the bed at the home of my parents when I created this image. It was probably during the early 1980s.

I  had an 11-by-17 print made of this photograph, but never framed it or placed it on display.

It was one of those situations in which you think an image would look good as an enlargement but once I made the enlargement I never took the next step.

I didn’t make many images of Tiger during her lifetime so now this image has taken on greater importance than when I had that enlargement made many years ago.

Please Keep Me, Too!

with one comment

We’ve been going through boxes in the attic and getting rid of stuff that we’ve had for years but no longer need. Truth be told maybe we didn’t need it years ago, but some things tend to get saved because the time isn’t right to part with it.

A couple days ago another couple of boxes made their way down from the attic to my office. Next to them was an empty box that Mary Ann marked “Put stuff to keep in this box.”

It was late afternoon and neither of knew where Suki was. We were talking about something in my office when Mary Ann was surprised to see Suki sacked out in the empty “put stuff to keep” box.

Has a cat ever seen an empty box it didn’t want to get into?

Suki doesn’t often come into my office. But somehow she found the “put stuff to keep box” and made herself at home.

Mary Ann started laughing and went to get her smart phone. The image was too much to resist.

I’m sure it was pure coincidence that Suki got into this box. After all, cats can’t read, right?

Curled up on the End of the Roll

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbH

Back in the days when I used to make photographs on slide film I would often come home from a photo expedition with two, three or four frames left on the roll of film in my camera.

I wanted to take the film in right away to be developed but didn’t want to waste the unexposed frames.

My go-to subject matter for using up the rest of the roll was our cat Chessie. As cats are want to do, she was often napping somewhere in the house.

I would find her and make a few images to finish off the roll of film.

Such was the case with this image made in May 2009 when she was curled up in a ball on our bed.

Afternoon Sunlight Stripes

leave a comment »

suki-shadows-x

Our cat Suki likes to nap on the corner of the bed closest to a window facing south. In the afternoon  on sunny day, the sunlight streaks through the window, illuminating this corner of the bed.

Suki often finds that sunlight and sacks out for a long nap. The stripes on the bed are caused by the blinds in the window.

I don’t know why Suki is hanging over the edge of the bed. I wouldn’t think that would be comfortable, but cats don’t think the way that I do.
