Another Lake Erie Sunset

We were having dinner in Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio, at a restaurant that has a deck right on Lake Erie. We make it a point to go there for dinner once every summer on a warm evening.

This year we arrived later than usual. It was the first time I’d been there as the sun was setting.

Soon the sun would descend into a soup of gathering clouds.

Catawba sunset 03

I don’t know if these three women had intended to watch the sun set over Lake Erie at Catawba Island State Park.

They arrived well after the sun had set. But they had time to admire the red, orange and yellow glows of the light bending over the horizon and lighting up the sky before the arrival of the blue hour.

In some ways the after sunset light show is just a striking as watching the sun dip below the horizon.

Catawba sunset 05

I had just set up and it was a matter of waiting for the sun to set over Lake Erie at Catawba Island State Park near Clinton, Ohio.

Along came a boat and I had one of the photos I had hoped to create. Ah, the memories of summer.

Catawba sunset 02

A couple and their child are seated on a picnic table at Catawba Island State Park near Port Clinton, Ohio, to watch the sun set over Lake Erie.

As I write this, it is Labor Day 2016, which is the traditional day that ends summer. Depending on how you depend summer, it will last for a few more weeks. But from a cultural perspective, summer ends with Labor Day weekend and some might say it ends when schools resume.

Each season has it sown charm and emotional feelings. Summer is often associated with leisure, including taking the time to enjoy a Lake Erie sunset.

The sun sets over Lake Erie all year around, but there is something different about a summer sunset.

Catawba sunset 14

The sun has long since set, and the blue hour will also soon be history on this July day. I’m in Catawba State Park near Port Clinton, Ohio, and I want to get some one last photograph before leaving for home.

The view is looking southwestward over Lake Erie. The fading light yields an array of colors including blue, yellow, red and orange. I linger for a minute or two but then turn around and head for the parking lot. I’ll be back on another day.

Catawba sunset 01

The sun will be setting momentarily over Lake Erie. A couple is perched on a picnic table at Catawba Island State Park near Sandusky, Ohio. They are enjoying the sunset and I am enjoying making my first photographs of a sunset over Lake Erie. I’ve photographed Lake Erie many times, but never at sunset.
