Look, It’s an Alligator

Timing is everything. It’s a bit of folk wisdom that can apply to many circumstances in life, including photography.

There is moment waiting to be captured on film or megapixels and in the blink of an eye it’s gone.

Such was the case with catching an alligator from the lounge car of an Amtrak train making its way out of New Orleans for Chicago.

A crew member had said that if we looked carefully, we might see an alligator. Sometimes, the engineer of the train would spot a gator and radio the crew to tell the passengers to be on the lookout.

That wasn’t how I found this alligator. I just sat attentively watching the swamp through which the train was passing and had my camera ready.

I don’t remember if I spotted the gator first or someone else did and said something. But I was ready because, you know, timing is everything.
