Its the Season for Pumpkins on the Porch

Pumpkins are associated with Halloween because many people make jack-o-lanterns out of them. I tend to associate pumpkins with autumn because pumpkin pie is associated with Thanksgiving, which falls toward the end of autumn. Of course, Halloween falls during autumn, too.

Pumpkins begin showing up at markets and in front of houses well before Halloween as symbols of the harvest season.

This display on the front porch of a gift shop in Peninsula, Ohio, is representative of that theme. It seems, though, that a swarm of flies has discovered not just the pumpkin but also the corn stalks.
