Sunrise at Bort Road

I’ve always enjoyed watching and photographing railroad operations, yet there are times when some of the best images to be made of a railroad do not involve a train. This is one of those.

It is sunrise in North East, Pennsylvania, on a Sunday morning. The sun is just climbing over the horizon to he east and casting its light on the rails of the double-track CSX line.

I’m standing on the one-lane bridge that carries Bort Road over these rails. In the distance is Interstate 90.

Sticking up in the upper left-hand corner is the golden arches, which seems to be ubiquitous at major interchanges on the interstate highway system.

The rails seems to vanish up ahead into a black hole, but it is just a shadow cast by the I-90 bridge.

The tracks seem to be leading somewhere and if you have the least bit of wanderlust you’re going to tempted to want to go there.
